Checklist: Car Trip with a Toddler

Car trips with toddlers are in many ways easier than planes, of course. You can bring a cooler full of snacks, a box of toys, favorite toys, baby gear (cribs, car seats, strollers) and whatever size bags you want. You don’t have to worry about a car seat for the other side of the flight or pay to check an extra bag for the pack n play. That’s also the challenge! We find ourselves filling the car just for a weekend and then thinking- where did all this stuff come from and do we really need it? Here’s our checklist and tips and tricks for traveling with a toddler:

Gear

  • Car seat (probably already there!)

  • Stroller (we use a lightweight umbrella stroller for travel)

  • Pack n play (if needed)

  • Chargers

  • Sound machine (if needed)

Toy Box

  • We keep a storage bin with a few books and toys in the car at all times sitting on the floor under the car seat - it makes it easy to always have something to play with on hand and not worry about losing favorite toys

Snacks

  • Pouches, gummies, fruit rolls, turkey sticks and crackers all make good car snacks

  • a water bottle

In your toddlers bag

  • Vitamins

  • Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, face wash, lotion)

  • Diapers and wipes

  • Pajamas

  • Pacifier or lovey

  • Socks

  • Shoes

  • Pants or shorts for each day, plus spares

  • Shirts for each day, plus spares

  • Sweaters, jackets and hats as needed
